Advanced Surgical Training Workshop: Fistula & Reconstructive Surgery Maputo, February 2026
The workshop took place February 16-20 at Cruz Azul Clinic and Lenmed Hospital in Maputo. 12 nationals and 12 internationals surgeons participated in-person, including trainers. The intensive surgical program addressed highly complex cases including recurrent obstetric fistulas, post-repair urinary incontinence, patients previously considered “incurable,” and congenital urogenital malformations. 10 very complex cases operated, benefitting low-income women and girls from rural areas, with free surgeries. Outcomes: 5 patients retuned home well four weeks after surgery, 4 retuned 6 weeks after surgery, and 1 needs a second surgery to conclude her treatment with good prognosis.

The workshop was supported by the Fistula Foundation, the Irish Embassy, the French Embassy, with in-kind donations from Direct Relief and Medical Aid International. Focus Fistula carried out the event with partners the Ministry of Health, Cruz Azul Clinic and Lenmed Maputo Hospital.
